Arrrrrrrrrrr

Looks like piracy is going back to its roots after that short stint in copying CDs and Napster. How did the word “pirate” end up being used for both nerds who trade mp3s and hardened criminals on boats with RPGs, anyway? That one is a mind-tickler for sure.

Is it just me, or do these modern pirates need some more style? Nothing like the good ol’ days.

Wolfram’s 2,3 Turing Machine Is Universal — With Proof

If you can understand these news, you’re definitely a geek. For the rest of us humans, it’s very important news, with big implications in the future of computing.

Update: Apparently the proof has a boo-boo in it, so it’s back to the drawing board. According to some really smart guy, there’s an obvious elementary mistake in it. Come on, it was so elementary, he says!

Don’t Worry, Be Happy, or Unhappy

It looks like being having a positive outlook and being happy is overrated. A recent study shows that cancer patients with a positive outlook are just as likely to die as patients who are depressed about the cancer. Of course it’s better to have a positive outlook for its own sake, and so you won’t be so annoying to your loved ones by being constantly gloomy.

Lucas Can’t Get Enough “Star Wars”

Looks like George Lucas’ hideously lucrative Star Wars franchise is coming to a TV near you. Don’t expect the characters you’ve seen in the movies though, there will be a whole new slate of wonderful characters for which action figures will be available at your local toy store.

Don’t Steal, The Government Hates Competition

Don’t Steal, The Government Hates Competition

You have to hand it to a congressman with the chutzpah to put a sign like that on his desk. Very cool. From what it seems he is actually getting more popular even in the regular TV media. I agree with his economic policies, and smaller government, and it definitely wouldn’t hurt to shake things up a bit.

What If Google Itself Started With PR0?

Ever noticed how the Google search engine doesn’t do any of the recommended things the rest of us have to do for search engine optimization? Well that’s obvious because Google gets the automatic PR10… but what if Google itself started from scratch and had to design their user interface for Google? The results are a riot.

Left-Brained or Right-Brained?

Are you left-brained or right-brained? Check out the animation of the dancer. If you see her rotating clockwise, it means you’re right-brained, and if she’s rotating anti-clockwise, you’re left-brained. If you’re real good you should be able to switch the rotation just by thinking about it.

At first it was anti-clockwise for me, but then I looked away from the screen and now it’s clockwise, and so far I’m set in my ways. I wonder if that means anything special.

Update: It’s back to anti-clockwise for me again. Of course if you’re using your whole brain, you’d know that she is doing both, depending on whether you are looking from above or below.
